Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about the Center for Pediatric Excellence and our clinic policies.

Do you only see pediatric patients?

No. Although our clinic originally started as a pediatric clinic, it has expanded to include assessments and treatment for adults. For medical services, Dr. Michelle Mcbride is our family physician who predominantly sees patients who age out of Dr. van Stralen’s services. All of our psychologists will see adults for both assessments and treatment and our Occupational Therapist sees children, youth and young adults up to the age of 21.

You say you are a multi-disciplinary clinic. Do I have to see every discipline at the clinic?

No. The benefit of a multi-disciplinary clinic is that we have multiple types of services and professionals under one roof. This allows us to collaborate more easily with other professionals who are a part of your or your child’s care team and to share electronic medical records. For example, if your child has a psychoeducational assessment done then the medical team will offer to attend a joint feedback session with you, your child, and the psychologist to ensure the best integration of care between disciplines. Recommendations for other services at the Center for Pediatric Excellence are done on a case-by-case basis.

Can you provide services in French?

No. Our clinicians can only provide services in English. We are also unable to provide psychoeducational assessments to children and teens who attend a school in the French school board as at least part of the testing should be done in French.

If my child is a patient, will they be part of a clinical trial?

That is your and your child’s decision. Clinical trials can be an option only if the parents and child want to participate and the child qualifies for an active trial. If a member of your care team feels that participation in one of our clinical trials could be an option for your child, they may talk to you and provide information about the project. However, your child will not be included in a clinical trial until one of our research staff has discussed the trial with you and your child in detail and both you and your child have given written consent to participate. See our Clinical Trials page to learn more about participation in clinical trials at the Center for Pediatric Excellence.

I’ve contacted you. What happens next?

We make every effort to return phone calls, emails, and respond to requests received through the website within 2 business days. If you do not hear back from us within 3 business days, please reach out again. Clinicians may not be able to respond personally, but where appropriate messages will be relayed through our support staff.

What if I need to cancel an appointment?

To cancel an appointment, email admin@cfpe.ca call 613-76-7355 ext 100. As a courtesy to other patients who are waiting for appointments, please cancel as soon as you’re aware that you cannot make the appointment. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice are subject to a fee. Initial medical consultations will be charged $150 fee, follow-up appointments $50 and psychologists appointments with no show or late cancellation will be subject to the full fee of the appointment.

Do you offer remote appointments?

Yes. Many, but not all, appointments can be done remotely. For remote medical appointments, you will receive a link prior to your appointment. For the psychologists, the remote links are re-usable – please email admin@cfpe.ca if you need a link for a particular psychologist.

Some tests and assessments require that you and/or your child to be in-person. In such cases you will be informed at the time of booking if you and/or your child must be in-person. If you prefer in-person or remote, let your clinician know and they will do their best to accommodate your preference.

Can you provide video assessments and follow up outside of Ontario?

No. Our physicians are licensed in Ontario and health care is provincially funded.

Do you offer walk-in appointments?

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate walk-in appointments. All appointments at the Center for Pediatric Excellence are booked in advance. Please email admin@cfpe.ca or call 613-726-7355 ext 100.

I need a prescription renewal before my or my child’s next appointment. What do I do?

Your or your child’s doctor will provide a prescription with enough medication to last until the next appointment. In situations where you require a refill outside of an appointment (ex. you rescheduled the appointment or lost the prescription), you will be charged a fee. We require at least 72 hours notice for prescription renewals to be completed outside of an appointment.

I have/my child has a valid OHIP card. Are all your services covered?

Some but not all services are covered. Most Medical services are covered by OHIP. We will ask you to present your/your child’s valid Ontario health card at every appointment. If you do not have a valid health card, you will be charged for the appointment based on the Ontario Medical Association recommended rates. Services we provide at the Center for Pediatric Excellence that are not covered by OHIP include:

Payment for these services is due at the time that they are provided.

What if I don’t/my child doesn’t have a valid OHIP card?

You will be billed for services that fall under OHIP coverage. If there is no valid OHIP number, fees are the responsibility of the patient/family and are billed according to the Ontario Medical Association uninsured services fee recommendation.

Do you accept provincial health cards outside of Ontario?

All Provinces EXCEPT Quebec have reciprocal billing arrangements meaning that you can present a valid provincial card. Unfortunately we cannot accept Quebec health cards and you will be responsible for payment at / immediately after the appointment. Payments can be made in person or virtually using our secure billing platform – JANE.

How to I make a payment for services received?
Payments can be made in-person by Mastercard, Visa, Debit, or cheque. Payments for Psychology and Occupational Therapy appointments can be made in-person at the time of appointment, e-transfer, through our secure billing platform JANE, or by placing a credit card on file for automatic withdrawal. In order to authorize automatic withdrawl you do need to complete an e-form through our billing platform - Jane. For more information on automatic withdrawals, please contact psychologybookings@cfpe.ca.
