Dr. Tom Newman, Psychologist

Dr. Tom Newman is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as part of the team at the Centre for Pediatric Excellence. Following his undergraduate work at Redeemer University, Tom received a Master of Arts (2009) and Ph.D. (2014) in Clinical Psychology from Lakehead University. During his graduate training, he completed several clinical practicums at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre in Hamilton, and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. In addition, Tom conducted his graduate research examining the anxiety-reducing effects of moderate levels of physical activity. Since moving to Ottawa has built on his educational and work experience through his work at the Ottawa Centre for Cognitive Therapy, while also compelting a Core Curriculum Seminar at the Ellis Institute for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, in New York City.

Drawing on his extensive work and educational experiences, Tom strives to provide a collaborative therapeutic environment, and utilizes a variety of evidence-based techniques to help clients change their cognitions, mood, and behaviours. In order to facilitate clients in achieving their goals, Tom emphasizes the ability for clients to make changes, and experience growth through the application of effective therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, emotion regulation, behavioural activation, and effective communication among others. The therapeutic experience one can expect while working with Tom is characterized by an accepting and caring environment, with an optimistic approach. His therapeutic style is straightforward, rational, and infused with a healthy dose of humour.
